June 4, 2012 - Philippe Cousteau and EarthEcho International (http://www.earthecho.org) today
announced the launch of The Big CleanUP, an exciting summer-long challenge to engage middle
and high school students in a brighter future for the world’s oceans. The contest starts with
a webinar on Thursday, June 7 at 1:00pm EDT featuring program partners TerraCycle, a
national recycling system for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste, and One World
One Ocean, a multi-year campaign harnessing the power of film, television and new media to
restore a healthy ocean.
The webinar—featuring One World One Ocean’s amazing images, EarthEcho’s Water Planet
Challenge education resources, and TerraCycle’s unique tracking system—explores how plastic
affects the oceans, how these issues relate to classroom learning, and how young people can
take a leading role in protecting our oceans. The webinar will introduce participants to the Big
CleanUP challenge designed to engage youth in removing plastic debris from the waste stream
and to help earn money for school projects. After the webinar, Big CleanUP participants can
get started using EarthEcho’s CleanUP Action Guide and TerraCycle’s debris tracking system
to log their progress and compete to see which groups prevented the most trash from entering
the ocean. Contest prizes include TerraCycle products, One World One Ocean film passes,
and a school visit from Philippe Cousteau and Tom Szaky, as well as opportunities to win Flip
cameras.
Webinar speakers will include:
• Philippe Cousteau, Co-founder and President of EarthEcho International
• Greg and Barbara MacGillivray, Board of Directors of One World One Ocean
• Tom Szaky, Co-founder and CEO of TerraCycle
• Cathryn Berger Kaye, Education Consultant and Author
