The EarthEcho Expeditions team travels to the Pacific Northwest to explore how the continued absorption of carbon dioxide by our oceans is changing the fundamental chemistry that marine ecosystems depend on to operate.

It takes more than knowledge of environmental issues to equip young people with civic skills to solve the complex problems facing our planet. Through service learning, youth identify community needs, develop plans and partnerships and are inspired and motivated to take action. The Five Stages of Service Learning—investigation, preparation, action, reflection, and demonstration—provide a reliable process. By understanding how each stage works, youth become effective community changemakers.

    The EarthEcho Expeditions team travels to Washington’s Olympic Coast to examine ocean acidification, one of the fundamental challenges facing our water planet. The Pacific Northwest’s marine waters are particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification due to the natural process of coastal upwelling, and thus provide a sneak peek into the future of this emerging global issue. This leg of the expedition will focus on scientists working with students and leaders in Native American communities to better understand how ocean acidification affects not only the marine ecology, but also the people that are inextricably linked to the Olympic Coast.

    It’s difficult to understand that an invisible threat like ocean acidification impacts the vast ecosystems in our oceans. Small changes in pH can have far-reaching effects on marine species,from dissolving shells to disappearing food sources. Take a closer look with the EarthEcho Expeditions team as they explore research labs in and around Puget Sound. Discover how the humble oyster may have been the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” for ocean acidification, and find out what types of marine life may be most susceptible to lower ocean pH.

    OA Unit from NOAA Ocean Data Education (NODE) Project

    This curriculum, from the NOAA Ocean Data Education (NODE) Project, incorporates a scaled approach to learning. Each module offers activities at five different levels of student interaction, sometimes referred to as Entry, Adoption, Adaptation, Interactivity, and Invention. The early levels are very directed and teacher-driven, which provides important first steps when learning something new. The levels of Adaptation through Invention are more student-directed and open up opportunities to design lessons featuring student inquiry.
