Philippe Cousteau Jr.’s EarthEcho International Invites Secondary School Teachers to Examine the Impacts of Technology and Fisheries along the Coastlines of Plymouth, England on EarthEcho Expeditions: What’s the Catch?

Expedition to Plymouth supported by the Northrop Grumman Foundation

Washington, D.C. (April 1st, 2019): EarthEcho International, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping youth with resources to act now for a sustainable future, invites secondary school teachers in England to join Philippe Cousteau Jr. for an EarthEcho Expedition. EarthEcho Expeditions leverage the rich Cousteau legacy of exploration and discovery to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education alive for today’s 21st-century learners and their teachers. Thanks to support from the Northrop Grumman Foundation, EarthEcho is bringing secondary school teachers throughout England on an exploration of technology and fisheries in Plymouth, England.

Participating teachers will serve as Expedition Fellows and have the chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity they can take back to their classrooms to engage and inspire their students and others around the world. The program includes an on-site production experience and collaborative curriculum creation to develop adventure-based STEM learning modules that introduce students to the innovative engineering and technology solutions addressing fisheries management, policy and community impacts. During 2020, the EarthEcho Expedition modules created by the educator team will be distributed digitally to classrooms across the world at no charge. Interested teachers can find more information on how to apply at http://earthecho.org/expeditions. The deadline for interested applicants is Friday, May 31st, 2019 and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the deadline.

“EarthEcho Expeditions provides educators with the opportunity to experience the frontlines of environmental issues and the experts and community leaders who are developing real-world solutions to solve them. Our focus with each expedition is to create place-based education experiences that can be leveraged on a global scale through our Expedition Fellows,” said Philippe Cousteau, Jr., founder of EarthEcho International. “England is home to some of our most prolific fisheries. We are excited to partner with the Northrop Grumman Foundation on this year’s timely Expedition, examining innovative solutions to protect critical fish populations and the people and communities who depend on them,” said Cousteau.

During August 2019, Expedition Fellows will learn first-hand from scientists and engineers, the consequences of fisheries mismanagement and how this can be changed for the better with new technological approaches and discoveries.

“We are delighted to continue our support of the outstanding EarthEcho International programs,” said Sandra Evers-Manly, president of the Northrop Grumman Foundation and Northrop Grumman vice president of global corporate responsibility. “We are looking forward to working with this year’s educators to spark enthusiasm in their students, to learn more about STEM concepts and the environment.”

EARTHECHO INTERNATIONAL: EarthEcho International is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that youth have the power to change our planet. Established by siblings Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau in honor of their father Philippe Cousteau Sr. and grandfather legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, our mission is to inspire young people worldwide to act now for a sustainable future. EarthEcho’s programs are developed for youth and teachers by youth and teachers. All of our resources are designed to equip new generations of leaders and problem solvers to identify and tackle environmental challenges in their own communities and beyond. NORTHROP GRUMMAN AND THE NORTHROP GRUMMAN FOUNDATION: Northrop Grumman and the Northrop Grumman Foundation are dedicated to expanding and enhancing sustainable science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education opportunities for students globally. In 2018, the organizations contributed nearly $20 million to diverse, STEM-focused organizations and programs. Our partnerships focus on engineering and technology-based initiatives that excite, engage and educate students and provide professional development opportunities for their teachers, with an emphasis on middle school and university level programs. Defending cyber networks, engineering autonomous vehicles and exploring space are some of the capabilities students develop as they experience the excitement of STEM through programs supported by Northrop Grumman and the Northrop Grumman Foundation. Initiatives such as the Northrop Grumman Foundation Teachers Academy provide professional development opportunities for STEM teachers, who inspire students to pursue STEM careers.
