EarthEcho in Galápagos!

In early January, the EarthEcho team joined Celebrity Cruises on the Galápagos island of Santa Cruz to better understand how the archipelago perceives and addresses conservation. In an effort to connect with local youth, we visited Ecology Project International (EPI) and their Mola Mola Club, a program for young people working to mobilize their local communities to act for conservation. The actions of the Mola Mola Club protects the unique flora and fauna that make the Galápagos not only a beautiful place to visit, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Through meetings with representatives from the Galápagos Ministry of Education, Galápagos National Park, Charles Darwin Research Station, Galápagos Conservancy, and the Scalesia Foundation, we began to understand the challenges people from the islands face. It is hard to protect and preserve something you have never seen before, and many Santa Cruz residents don’t get the opportunity to visit the other islands in the archipelago to appreciate the diverse wildlife each island has to offer. Nor do youth residents typically travel abroad to understand how others perceive their unique homeland and what a commodity that is. Without experiencing the incredible wildlife first-hand or understanding the global call to action from youth across the world, it is a challenge to understand the special value of the Galapagos and foster that desire to preserve and protect the archipelago. EarthEcho hopes to collaborate with Celebrity Cruises and several of the youth-serving organizations we met to foster an exchange, so that young leaders in the Galápagos and those currently working with EarthEcho may meet with and learn from one another.

Towards the end of the trip, the EarthEcho team joined the extended Celebrity team onboard the Celebrity Flora, “one of the most eco-friendly ships sailing anywhere.” We toured the ship, experiencing their sustainability efforts in everything from meals, to onboard consumable products, to the daily operations in the bridge. Each voyage of the Flora makes a nearly complete tour of the Galápagos Islands and even provides a well-equipped research space for guests to immerse themselves in the biodiversity of Galápagos, a place that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

A comienzos de Enero, el equipo de EarthEcho se unió a Celebrity Cruises en la isla Santa Cruz, perteneciente a Galápagos, para entender de mejor manera como el archipiélago percibe y aborda la conservación en las islas. En un esfuerzo para conectar con jóvenes locales, nosotros visitamos Ecology Project International (EPI) y su grupo, Mola Mola Club, un programa para adolescentes que moviliza a sus comunidades para actuar por la conservación. El trabajo de Mola Mola Club, protege la única flora y fauna que hace a Galápagos no solo un lugar hermoso para visitar, sino también un Patrimonio de la Humanidad por UNESCO.

A través de reuniones con representantes del Ministerio de Educación de Galápagos, Parque Nacional Galápagos, Estación Investigativa Charles Darwin, Conservación Galápagos y Fundación Scalesia, empezamos a entender los desafíos que los habitantes de las islas enfrentan. Es difícil de proteger y preservar algo que nunca has visto antes, con ello, muchos residentes de Santa Cruz no tienen la oportunidad de visitar las otras islas del archipiélago para apreciar la diversa fauna silvestre que estas ofrecen. Tampoco, los jóvenes residentes viajan al extranjero habitualmente para entender la forma en que otros perciben la unicidad de su tierra natal y lo preciado que es. Sin experimentar la increíble fauna silvestre de primera mano o el entendimiento del llamado global para tomar acción por jóvenes de todo el mundo, es un desafío comprender el valor especial de Galápagos y a través de ello, fomentar el deseo de preservar y proteger el archipiélago. EarthEcho espera colaborar con Celebrity Cruises y de muchas de las organizaciones que sirven a la juventud que conocimos, para fomentar un intercambio, con el fin de que jóvenes líderes de Galápagos y de aquellos que trabajan actualmente con EarthEcho, puedan conocerse y aprender del uno al otro.

Hacia el final del viaje, el grupo de EarthEcho se unió al extenso equipo de Celebrity Cruises a bordo del Celebrity Flora, “uno de los cruceros más ecológicos que navegan en cualquier lugar.” Nosotros tuvimos la oportunidad de turistear el barco, experimentar sus esfuerzos sostenibles que estaban en todas partes, desde la comida, productos consumibles abordo, hasta las operaciones diarias en la sala de operaciones. Cada viaje de Flora hace casi un completo tour de las islas Galápagos y también provee un bien equipado espacio de investigación para los tripulantes, para que puedan estar inmersos en la biodiversidad de Galápagos, un lugar que debiera estar en la lista de viajes de todos.
