Summary

The North Atlantic Great White Shark Puzzle: A Virtual Field Trip with EarthEcho and OCEARCH

Since 2012, OCEARCH has been on expeditions conducting research on apex predator sharks in the North Atlantic, to enable research that would help solve the puzzle of the life history of these keystone species. One of the studies includes researching the movements of White Sharks in the North Atlantic. All of this research is then open sourced so all of us can learn about where these sharks are going, when, and why. Join us as we talk about tagging technology and sharks with OCEARCH! Learn about the technology behind the pings, shark science, and what we can all do to help the future of these amazing animals and our ocean.

Panelists

Lindsay Laughner

Marine Science Educator & OCEARCH Education Ambassador

Lindsay Laughner is a marine science educator and an OCEARCH Education Ambassador. In these roles, she integrates the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker and the next generation science standards into the OCEARCH S.T.E.M. curriculum, and S.T.E.M. education programs to prepare students to be the next generation of ocean stewards. She has joined OCEARCH on six expeditions, where she is a part of education outreach, and collaborates with scientists and crew members to create content that connects students and teachers with the research conducted on the ship, and the science of the ocean and marine species. For more information about OCEARCH, or S.T.E.M. Education curriculum and programs, please visit www.ocearch.org.

Make A Splash: A Kid's Guide to Protecting Our Oceans, Lakes, Rivers & Wetlands provides a closer look at our oceans and waterways and our role in protecting this water planet.

OCEARCH Curriculum: Lesson plans for grades 3-5 and 6-8 are now available for free download. Addressing a tremendous demand for dynamic STEM content, OCEARCH and Landry’s Inc. proudly present a new curriculum that allows students to learn alongside Ph.D.’s – for free – in a program that will eventually span K-12. Based on real science and the Global Shark Tracker™, this dynamic curriculum is intended to promote environmental awareness and to prepare students of all ages for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

A Service Learning Guide for Citizen Journalism: Citizen journalism can be a powerful form of activism. Wherever you are, the time has arrived to look at the world in a different way, to ask questions, and gather with others to tell stories of what is happening to the environment in our communities. This is our opportunity, as caring, responsible members of this global society, to be citizen journalists.

OCEARCH Shark Tagging STEM Lesson: Learn about the tags that OCEARCH scientists and researchers use to learn more about GreatWhite Sharks in the hands-on STEM lesson.

Science Standards

Potential Next Generation Science Standards Included in this Virtual Field Trip:

ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems:  Human activities have significantly altered the biosphere, sometimes damaging or destroying natural habitats and causing the extinction of other species. But changes to Earth’s environments can have different impacts (negative and positive) for different living things. (MS-ESS3-3)
ESS2-3.Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.
ESS2-2. Describe and graph the amounts of saltwater and freshwater in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
ESS3-1. Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
MS-ESS3. Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.
