Young Ocean Advocates Unite for High Seas Treaty Ratification: 2025 High Seas Youth Ambassadors Announced
Washington, DC – EarthEcho International and the High Seas Alliance are excited to announce the selection of the 2025 High Seas Youth Ambassadors. These seven dynamic young ocean advocates, ages 19-22, will represent diverse regions across the globe – Canada, Jamaica, the Maldives, the Philippines, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zambia. Together, the Ambassadors will lead creative campaigns to rally public and political support for the ratification of the High Seas Treaty, the world’s first legally binding framework for protecting high seas biodiversity.
“The growing movement led by youth is reshaping global conservation efforts, and this year’s class of High Seas Youth Ambassadors is at the heart of this movement,” said Philippe Cousteau Jr., founder of EarthEcho International, “Their energy, creativity, and determination will be instrumental in driving the necessary momentum to ensure the High Seas Treaty enters into force for the protection of our ocean.”
Rebecca Hubbard, Director of the High Seas Alliance, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “The involvement of youth in the ratification and implementation of the High Seas Treaty is critical to ensuring we achieve urgent, effective, equitable conservation of high seas biodiversity at a time when our ecosystems and climate are on the verge of breakdown. We have already found the Youth Ambassadors from 2024 to have a great influence on their communities and political leaders and are excited and grateful to be working with this new group of inspiring, young leaders in 2025.”
The High Seas Treaty is vital to the global effort to protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 (the 30x30 goal), a critical initiative to halt the decline of ocean biodiversity and restore marine ecosystems. Covering 64% of the Earth's oceans, the high seas are home to some of the planet’s most ecologically significant, yet threatened and under-protected areas.
To bring the High Seas Treaty into force, it must be ratified by at least 60 countries. The 2025 High Seas Youth Ambassadors will be central to amplifying the urgency of this mission and rallying global youth engagement to achieve this landmark goal.
