LeAnn Hanson

Expedition Fellow: Plasticseas

LeAnn Hanson confesses a deep desire to both learn and educate and after 20 years in the educational sector, knows she has found her calling.  She has a passion for the environment and spends a lot of time outdoors and exploring the world. Experiences in the wider world help inform her teaching practice as a librarian at Huskisson Public School, near Jervis Bay, where she shares her knowledge and concerns for this planet.  Over the past years, she has partnered with Plastic Pollution Solutions to develop and deliver lessons and activities that empower students and community organizations to be part of the solution to plastic pollution. The next stage of LeAnn’s journey will see her working with other educators to facilitate behavioral changes through education.

LeAnn has a Bachelor's degree in teaching and Masters degree in Education from Wollongong University and before becoming a teacher/librarian has previously enjoyed 10 years as an Opportunity Class teacher for gifted students. Her passion for the environment led by the belief in hands-on learning allowed her to expose her students to all aspects of our changing world. LeAnn’s love of drama and film-making enabled her students to express themselves and their environmental learning on the stage and screen.

LeAnn looks forward to learning more about plastics in our seas and how we can facilitate a behavioral change in our world as educators. Her colleague, Anthony Hill, at Plastic Pollution Solutions sums it up well when he points out that: “We believe that the solution to this problem resides in each and every one of us. Our mission is to inspire and empower a shift in consciousness through awareness and education.  We focus on educating to facilitate behavioral change which we see as paramount and from which all elements of the solution will follow.
